Random friending

I don't get people on LJ who randomly add you to their Friends List. Is this some sort of "Lookit how many friends I have!" thing, or a way to annoy other people, or something else entirely?

In a somewhat related vein, I have no idea what possessed someone to try and join emeraldshadows with a journal for a character from some weird Underworld knockoff game. No character sheet sent to me, no, "Hi, I wanna lurk" comment on the thread I've set up for lurkers, just a random automated message that someone tried to join the community in my e-mail box. Never mind that it says, "You MUST have an approved PC to join this community," right in the User Info. Apparently sie couldn't be bothered to read that before clicking on the link....

There seems to be a whole LJ etiquette around friending being a way of saying "hello, I like reading your stuff" and 'real' friends get a special filter. Either that, or people are much looser about who they share what with.

I just syndicate people I'm interested in reading and friend... my friends. Mostly. We all have to live in the society.

Could be...though I've gotten Friended by a couple of people who openly state that they randomly add people. *Those* are the ones that I don't get.

If I find someone whose stuff appears to be intelligent and of shared interest of some sort, I will add them, and leave a comment that I added them -- and that I'll UNadd them if they like

It's very cool that you actually leave a comment that you added someone.

Was their name the same as the community they're from?

Recently, every open RPG-based community was spammed with an invite to a crappy underworld knockoff RP. By someone with one character's difference between their nick and the community's name.

It might be that person.

Their name wasn't the same as the community you mention, but they *are* a member of it (I saw a number of those invites on various comms, so I think I know which community you're referring to).

So it's probably just as well I didn't add them....:)

Most likely the same person looking to pull the same shit.
