I'm cursed...

I really have to stop posting in some of the RPG communities on LJ. It seems like every third time I do, my post ignites some sort of argument. Yeesh.

Of course, I think I've learned not to expect logical discussion from some of these people. To quote creativedv8tion, "it's less painful that way."

Some folks seem to enjoy igniting the flames of arguement, to argue for the sake of arguing.

Not much you can do really... if you ever saw Usenet in times past, you'd know. :P Blogs and journals are the Usenet of the 21st century.

I got into a huge flame war once because I suggested that no one plays "Runequest" anymore. Lighten up, fanboys!

Why the perjorative term?

Just wondering, because a flamewar does sort of imply some back and forth action, and it seems strange that you get to take the moral high ground after making an obviously incorrect statement.

That's the weird part of it, I didn't perpetuate the flame war. I work in a library and I made a funny post about the Dewey Decimal Classification System number for roleplaying, and how it gave as an example Dungeons and Dragons (most likely 1st ed) and Runequest. The entry was obviously written in 1979. I made a snarky comment like "When was the last time you ever heard of someone sitting down to play a game of Runequest?" and several dozen people had to write in bad mouthing me about it, and then arguing with themselves. I should have turned off the emailed comments on that entry so I could just avoid the drama.

It could have been worse ... it could have cited SenZar or The Spawn of Fashan, two of the Legendary Icons of Gaming Badness.
