Do players even bother to look at their sheets when they're making up backgrounds anymore?

I've got a prospective player for my tabletop game, and I just got her character background. It's rather trite, but even more astonishing is that it does not match her character sheet. Not at all.

OK, so here's the background (note that the character's name has been snipped to protect the guilty)

She was Born in France to royal blood her father was a duke. She spent most of her childhood there with her family
when she was sixteen her mother and father were killed when there car went over a Cliff coming from their country home.
[She] inherited their entire fortune. She went to the finest schools and is very well educated. She has a masters in physiology and
ancient religions. She has investments all over the world and many business ties also.

When she was eighteen she met the love of her life. They were engaged to be married but three days prior to the wedding he vanished
no one has any information to what happened to him. She was devastated and swore she would find him. She then decided to come to the
States. She bought property on the beach in California and in new Orleans a large plantation there she opened her first detective agency hoping to find her true love. She came to Washington DC to open a partner branch she bought a large home which is fully staffed. She enjoys throwing and attending high socitity events . She is very elegant but has her wild and dark side. She owns many Harley and trucks and a humvee and a limo service. She is constantly searching for information on her true love. She will not stop till she finds him. She loves to shop and spend money. but she can afford it. Her investments are handled by her personally she trust no one. For she herd her true love was taken by something dark and mysterious. He was last seen buying her ring and a woman in black was seen following him no one knew any more than this she was able to track the woman to the states. She will never stop searching and let nothing stand in her way of finding her true love.

she is very flirty and seductive she uses her looks to get what she wants from men.

And here's the character sheet:

I'm not sure this character's going to work out without a lot of revising....

Off to have breakfast -- this is the sort of thing that needs to be tackled on a full stomach.

Is she even aware that France does not currently have a monarchy? Or an aristocracy?

Or that the closest currently-known relatives to the previous French royal line are in ... Spain, if I remember correctly?

I'm not even touching the sheet. You can do that all by yourself. :)

Well, it doesn't look like she's coming back -- maybe the questions I sent her regarding her background have scared her off. ;-)

Probably just as well, seeing that thing above....

Just for shits and giggles, here are the questions I asked the player after I got the background (again, the character's name has been snipped to protect the guilty):

1. If [the character] is independently wealthy, why is she working as a private investigator, and living in an apartment complex that caters to people like students and newlyweds (i.e., people without much money)?

2. According to the character sheet you gave me, [the character] has *NO* Resources Background. To own all of the things you say that she does, she would need a Resources Background at 4 dots (5 to be on the safe side). Thus, I would suggest re-allocating some of her Background dots to Resources if you want to keep this background story.

3. If no one knew anything about the "woman in black," how was [the character] able to track her to the U.S.? She would need some sort of name or other information (even if it was fake). After all, one can't just go and randomly accost every woman in black (and there are a *lot* of them in the area the game takes place in -- goths, art students, Eiluned fae, sluagh, Scathach fae, etc.) one finds on the street...;-). Perhaps she has a name, at least, to go on? If she does, I need to know how she found it out.

4. I don't believe that there are any privately-owned plantations left in New Orleans these days; I don't really see your character owning one.

5. I don't think that there's going to be much call for a humvee in this game. Besides, she can't afford one with her current Resources of 0, and it'd be murder to park something like that in the Washington, D.C. area. ;-)

6. Having the kind of money to afford everything you've outlined above just doesn't really fit into this game (all the characters live in an apartment building, many of the NPCs are students, none of the other PCs has that much money, etc.). If you want to keep the "descended from aristocracy" bit from above, perhaps she *used* to have all that stuff, but has somehow lost it? Perhaps she sold most of her assets, sinking the money into looking for her lost love? That might explain why she's living in an apartment complex instead of a mansion or something like that.

7. If her whole purpose is to find her lost love, why is she using her looks to get what she wants from other men? Seems to me that she might be saving herself for the one true love of her life....;-)

8. I'd like a little more detail on her lost love. What is his name, where is he from, how did they meet, etc.?

I still haven't gotten any answers. Perhaps it's just as well. :-)
