True20

Yesterday, lostsatyr and I went to our Friendly (not so) Local Game Store, Crazy Egor's, where lostsatyr picked up the True20 Adventure Roleplaying core rulebook.

I've been looking through it, and so far I love it to death. There are no character classes (EDIT: well, actually, there *are* "classes," but they're broad enough to fit a number of different archetypes under three "umbrellas"), no hit points, no attacks of opportunity, no alignments, and no creating characters with random die rolls.

On the other hand, the Feats and Skills make sense, character creation is point-based (with a +5 to -5 scale, sort of like Ars Magica), advancement is story-based, and the system allows you to model just about any sort of world you can imagine - without having to buy another rulebook. Like they say in the introduction - you don't have to spend $90.00 on three books that have what you don't want, and then give them $30.00 for a book that has what you do want.

I think this is a game system I could really enjoy playing - and GMing, for that matter.

I really enjoy True20. It's pretty fast and easy, and there are a lot of hidden strengths. For instance, arrows are rarely more than a nuisance in D&D. In True20 they're a continual, and deadly, threat.

Although ... there kind of are "classes" ... Warrior, Expert, and Adept.

Good to know, especially since I like to play archers. :)

Yes, you're right - though they aren't as much of a pigeon-hole as the D&D classes. Fixed it above.
