My journal is called _____ because _____.
My subtitle is _____ because _____.
My friends page is called _____ because _____.
My username is ____ because _____.
My default userpic is _____ because_____.

My journal is called "I Build Worlds With Words Alone" because it's a line from a Heather Alexander song about writers. A number of years ago at this point, eslin had mentioned to me that the song could also apply to GMs.

My subtitle is _____ because _____. I don't currently have a subtitle, so I guess this one doesn't apply.

My friends page is called "M's Friends" because I didn't want to use my full name on this LJ (since I post on a lot of comms with it), and kind of liked using my first initial. It also sort of ties into my "being in charge" as a GM, just like "M" of James Bond fame. And no, I don't think I look like Judi Dench. At least, I hope not....

My username is thegamemistress because I like to run RPGs, and being the feminist user of non-sexist terms that I am, I prefer to use "Gamemistress" as a less sexist alternative to "Gamemaster." The term came from a button I bought at a convention, that reads, "Anything done by a Gamemaster is better done by a Gamemistress."

My default userpic is a photomanip of Sarah Felton (from Knights of the Dinner Table) and Gilly the Perky Goth (from Dork Tower) sitting together at a gaming table, with the saying, "RPGs aren't just for boys," because I'm a female gamer (and old enough to remember the days when female gamers were rarer than the proverbial hens' teeth), and I like both Sarah and Gilly, as well as the comic books they appear in.

(The icon was originally going to have Kayleigh, another character from DT, but I like Sarah so much better and thought she'd be more recognizable, so I photomanipulated her into the picture over Kayleigh.)

ahem. Not to get all controversial or anything, but gamemistress is just as sexist as gamemaster, isn't it? It's still attributing a gender to a gender-non-relevant position, n'est-ce pas?

Clearly it doesn't join the male-dominated world of pronouns.

Too bad that game-runner is such a mouthful.

Doug. Game-runner.

We could always just use referee or judge... Not that they're terribly accurate, but 'master' and 'mistress' don't actually describe the GM function too well either.

Of late, I lean toward "Moderator." It seems to describe the function of being a GM quite well, at least for me.

And I guess I was in my more radical feminist phase when I adopted the term, "gamemistress." :-)

Not that I'm one to talk...
I don't think it's particularly 'radical' to reverse arbitrarily gender specific language and see what pops up...

Actually, the best test of whether language (or a given situation) is sexist is to reverse the stated genders and see if it's nonsensical. In this case, both terms are valid - male or female GM, good descriptor, no value judgement involved.

Final authority, certainly, but total control?

Had a good discussion with the GM who ran for me last night about his one shot. I admitted that it was pretty clear he expected us to do X, but that I thought Y worked pretty well. He brought out the truism that players NEVER do what you plan, and that a good GM can work around it.

If you want TOTAL control write a book, and hope that none of your characters come to life. Don't try to GM.

I'm not assuming anything. I'm asserting that having final authority is not the same thing as having total control.

Gaming is a group process, and, unfortunately, there are some GMs who forget that. I've never gamed with you, so I'm in no position to judge whether that applies to you or not.
