You know what's starting to irk the crap out of me? People who automatically assume that if you play something, you must be a "twink" or a "bad rper."

Brujah. Gangrel. Scathach. Ahroun. Black Furies. Devil Tigers. Fenrir. Trolls. Fighters. Characters with big sharp swords. Mages. Martial artists. Elves. Characters who are Japanese or Celtic or whatever other ethnic background happens to be "kewl" and "trendy" at the moment. I've played them all at one time or another, and I don't consider myself either a "twink" or a "bad player" just because I happen to like playing whatever. Some of us can play [whatever] without resorting to twinkery, thankyouverymuch.

I even tried to point someone who had the above view to what I thought was a well-played and thought out character (my Scathach squire 8th-grader from ctd_epiphany, and got a snarky comment back about how people should expect the worst because she happens to be half-Japanese and half-Irish. Errr, what? *looks confused*

If people want to think I'm a twink for playing things I like to play, they can go ahead and think that. The people I play with know the truth, and that's what matters.

Well, most of my vampires have been Brujah (everything from idealists to iconoclasts), I love to play Mages, and I've played Get, Furies, and Ahroun in my day. (I tend to prefer ragabashes or theurges, and playing Shadow Lords, but I have a pretty broad variety.) I think Scathach rock, but nobody's ever let me play one in the few places I've played Changeling. (Except in Rowan - I didn't app for one in Rowan because at the time we had the twins, and I figured I'd rather dig out the Fiona I made but never got to play.)

I've also played a fair number of Irish-American characters, because guess what? That's my primary heritage. I don't play characters from cultures I don't know anything about, and I don't do cliches.

A lot of it, I think, is that in MUSHland, those things are sooooo overdone. OTOH, who gives a shit? If someone is a good roleplayer, they can make even the archetypes I hate fun. Like, f'rinstance, Rowan's pooka. We have good pooka. Normally, I hate pooka because their players in past experience were, by and large, total asshats.

I'm of the opinion that you should look at the whole character, not the archetype, before judging.

"You see that Terry? We're good! We're better than good! We're the bestest pooka EVER!!"

Terry just sighs and drags Rita-Anne back to the Rowan game.

Well, maybe you should make a character named "Greg" so I that all will be fair, eh?

First off - I'm not saying you're a twinkie, I think of you as more of a bowl of ice cream with either hot caramel or fudge topping, whipped cream, and multi-coloured sprinkles.

Yep, she's yummy ;-)

That being said, I can understand why so many people jump to conclusions - because there are twinky trends. There are so many twinks that play the same select concepts, types, classes, races, whatever of characters.

And she likes to play Scathoc, so that ends to instantly get labled "twink."

What I remeber as her original reason for liking the House - it's crest, a black unicorn.

What I like about that house, is that they stayed behind. I like the house Beaumayn.

Midori, love. YOu could never be a twink. A twink is not what you play but how you play. It just so happens that twinks lack imagination and tend to copy each other or anything that is cool. You are cool (I'm sure someone out that has copied you).

I created a character once that pushed the twink concept. Not that she was any of the typical 'traps', but because I asked first if I could use pooka merits and flaws on a Water person. I created what under a twink would have been a nasty combat monster. I water mococine with all the venumous traits etc, granite for a totem, and Bear for a Spirit Companion.

While I agree that stereotype are a bad thing, they came about for a reason. Picking the system I recognize (V:tM), I'd say it's a safe bet that if someone is playing Brujah or Gangrel, they're a twink (er, I think, I'm used to the EQ meaning which is different). If they're not, well, sorry.

Of course, that gets into the whole question of "what the hell *IS* good roleplaying anyway", the can of which I shall leave closed.
